Changing minds (and majors)

April 2, 2022

Most incoming college students have a pretty good idea of what they want to study. Moreover, the fact that their college offered their major or program of interest is the number-one reason students enrolled where they did, cited as the top decision-making factor by nearly two thirds of respondents in the latest Student Voice survey from Inside Higher Ed and College Pulse, presented by Kaplan.

An even higher percentage of students—nearly nine out of 10—say they arrived at college with a major in mind. But given some time to explore and reflect, about two in five of those students changed their mind, suggesting that colleges with well-rounded offerings may be better able to meet the needs of many students.
