Kaplan Employees Volunteer to Make a Difference in Communities Across the Country on Day of Service

Apr. 13, 2015

More than 1,500 employees nationally give back to help local non-profits as part of company-wide Serve-A-Thon

Fort Lauderdale, FL – (April 13, 2015) – More than 1,500 employees from Kaplan rolled up their collective sleeves on Friday, April 10 to make a difference in 52 communities across the country, including in south Florida.

In Broward County, where Kaplan Higher & Professional Education is headquartered, more than 300 employees spent the day helping three non-profit agencies supported by the United Way of Broward County-Broward Children’s Center and ChildNet and The FLITE Center.

The volunteer opportunities are organized as part of Kaplan Higher and Professional Education’s biannual Serve-A-Thon, which brings together teams of Kaplan employees for various service projects that help non-profits in need and make our local communities stronger.

Teams of employee volunteers fanned out over five Broward Children Center locations. Landscaping areas were cleaned out and beautified with more than 400 new plantings. Buildings were power-washed and re-painted and common areas were improved and updated, along with several new fences installed. Kaplan volunteers also assembled more than 300 overnight bags for foster children supported by ChildNet and The FLITE Center. Kaplan, which was recently named by Forbes magazine as one of America’s Top 100 employers, donated all the materials. Employee volunteers were also given paid time off to participate.

“Our employees, who help support some 50,000 adult learners that attend our colleges and universities, are very mission driven. They give back in many different ways throughout the year. Our company-wide Serve-A-Thon is among the most popular of our community events. It’s a fun way for our employees to get together and help dozens of local organizations that do a world of good in our communities,” said Lisa Gefen Sicilian, Kaplan Higher and Professional Education’s Chief Administrative Officer.

Examples of additional Serve-a-Thon volunteer activities included sorting donated canned goods and produce for the Greater Chicago Food Depository in Chicago, where Kaplan University is headquartered, to serving lunches to veterans in the VA Hospital in Orlando, and assisting individuals with disabilities in using computers in Dallas.
