Kaplan University Introduces New Cybersecurity Degrees

Jul. 28, 2015

Skyrocketing costs of cybercrime and job outlook point to increasing demand for cybersecurity professionals

DAVENPORT, Iowa – July 28, 2015- Cybercrime is a big and growing enterprise that experts say drains about $445 billion from U.S businesses each year. The global impact conservatively exceeds more than $1 trillion annually.

In response to this enormous challenge, many businesses and public agencies are devoting more and more resources to improving their cybersecurity. To help, Kaplan University has added two new degree offerings under the School of Business and Information Technology (IT) – the Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity and Master of Science in Cybersecurity Management. Kaplan University is among the first online universities to offer these programs reflecting the fast-growing demand for cybersecurity professionals, which is expected to grow by 37 percent by 2022.

A recent PWC global information security report cited an increase of 48 percent from 2013 to 2014 on the number of security breaches and incidents reported by organizations across various business sectors. This has led to mounting demand for information security professionals, which the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook projects to increase by 100,000 jobs in the next seven years.

“Organizations around the world, including governments and businesses large and small, are dealing with an exploding menace that is cybercrime. They are fortifying their IT workforces and employing new technologies to remain vigilant in the face of ever-mounting cyber security threats,” said Thomas Boyd, Ph.D., dean of Kaplan University’s School of Business and IT. “Kaplan University’s new programs accentuate rigorous curricula to prepare highly talented and adept graduates who can fill the current cybersecurity skills shortage plaguing companies in every industry.”

Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

The Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity will prepare graduatesfor entry level positions within the field by mastering the foundational goals of cybersecurity. Emphasis will be placed on implementing cybersecurity practices, recognizing and understanding the significance of security management, and obtaining relevant security related certifications.

Master of Science in Cybersecurity Management

The Master of Science in Cybersecurity Management will prepare graduates for leadership roles developing, directing and protecting critical information infrastructures, policies and practices. Graduates will be well-practiced in the management of information continuity, asset classification and control, compliance management, and the secure administration of IT infrastructure, as well as incident response.

“Kaplan University’s proficiency to synch the educational experience with workplace realities is further illustrated by our new programs,” remarked Kaplan University President Wade Dyke. “The degrees evolved from the growing global demand for cybersecurity professionals and present a host of promising and long-term career choices for graduates to pursue immediate and future job opportunities in the information security sector.”
